- Worn by Francis Ormond French (1837-1893) of Chester, NH, great grandfather of the donor. Found in the Amos Tuck French Papers (1996.145) at NHHS library. Was in envelope sent to Amos Tuck French (1863-1941) by Harriette Hollis of West Concord, NH, August 27, 1902. Envelope inscribed, "My Dear Amos, I send to you by mail a little garment, which belonged to your father when he was young enough to wear dresses. It was an outside wrap and called a 'tunic.' I well remember the little grey and green striped silk dress that went with it, as I wore both after he had out-grown them. It served as your costume for a little child but I have no doubt it was 'the thing,' as your grandmother believed in following the fashions. If you don't care for the 'tunic' it is very easy to put it in the rag-bag. My big doll wore it last. The doll was over fifty years old and it [was] played with by my grand-daughter."
