Provenance:
The portraits of Samuel Haley (1798-1884), his wife Sarah (Bartlett) Haley (1798-1854), and their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Haley (1833-1912), were painted by Joseph H. Davis (1811-1865) during May and June of 1837. To date, Davis, then a resident of Vassalboro, ME, is documented to have painted more than 150 portraits across Rockingham and Strafford Counties in New Hampshire and York County, ME, between 1832 and 1837. The Haleys were prosperous farmers who lived on what is today known as North River Road in Epping, NH, for several generations. The portraits descended through Sarah Elizabeth's family to her great-great-granddaughter, Nancy B. Chase, of Epping. The portraits have only ever resided on North River Road, Epping, in the homes of their descendants. In 1943 they were in possession of Sarah Elizabeth's daughters, Alice Burley Curtis (1870-1946) and Jane Cilley Burley (1872-1962). Since 1963 they have been in the house in which Samuel and Sally Haley lived during the 19th century (presently 352 North River Road, Epping, NH).
