Provenance:
Sanford Carroll (1810-1891) was born in South Walpole, MA, and lived in Dedham, MA, most of his life. He learned the trade of harnessmaking and operated a stable. He married (1) Harriet Whiting (1814-1840) and (2) Clarissa Alden (1823-1890). The portrait was donated by descendant John Alden Sanderson of Francestown, NH, and Los Angeles, CA.

Artists and brothers Walter Ingalls (1805-1874) and Gardner Ingalls (1800-1874) were born in Sanbornton, NH, and began painting portraits c. 1832. They worked in Lowell, Boston and other Massachusetts communities during the 1830s. Walter eventually returned to Sanbornton during the 1840s, where he farmed and built a studio. For more than thirty years, he made periodic trips across the east coast of the United States, painting portraits in Kennebunk, ME; Chicago, IL; Vicksburg, MS; and Washington, DC. He traveled to Europe to study art and made a painting trip to Brazil from 1863 through 1865. He returned to the Concord area, only to move to the Washington, DC, area where he spent the remainder of his life. Gardner Ingalls kept Lowell as his home base but traveled through the South during the 1850s and 1860s.
