Provenance:
Many lithograph portraits of Franklin Pierce were issued during the 1852 U.S. presidential campaign, as supporters rushed to publicize Pierce's candidacy, and during his term as President. The most widely distributed print portraits were by Nathaniel Currier, Kellogg Brothers, and Fetridge & Co., based on Southworth & Hawes daguerreotypes. Many of these print portraits were published as illustrations for biographies and national histories during Pierce's presidency. This lithograph was made from one of the daguerreotypes taken by William H. Kimball (1817-1892) of Concord in June 1852, after Pierce's nomination as the Democratic candidate for president. To date this is the only known print made from the 1852 Kimball daguerreotypes of Pierce.
