They moved to Rochester, NH, around 1900, where he worked in the Wyandotte woolen mill. According to Olivia Morison, Picard's granddaughter, he made his first violin for his daughter, who wanted to learn to play. He learned how to make violins by studying drawings of a Stradivarius. He died in Rochester in 1928 before he could complete this violin.
