Description:
Cheese press, three pieces.
A. Painted wood disc. Medium brown and painted wood with replaced handle. Flat and finished on all sides. Ten nails driven through it from top down into base disc. Two opposite sides have undercuts on sides, arch-shaped to allow disc to be picked up. On bottom on disc, four sections of iron wire, flush with surface; may be portions of staples that hold original handle in place. On top of disc, roughly rectangular shape extending beyond edges of repair block. Three exposed iron stubs at edges of repair block, on and in original repair disc. Sides of disc also painted or have white material adhered to surface. Red number on disc: "FP111A".
B. Steel and wood sieve. Tall inner hoop, 2.8" high, 0.15" thick. Medium-brown in color. Bent to form hoop that overlaps. About five tacks through overlap area. Overlaps tapered. Two tacks on inside overlap. Appears that corner of outside overlap is broken off. Another hoop, 1.4" high, with a tapered overlap. A portion of bottom edge missing with long horizontal crack in remaining material to left side of missing area. A woven steel wire screen stretched over bottom edge of large hoop. Smaller hoop passes over that bottom edge and extends upward. Nine tacks holding screen and possibly lower hoop in place, driven from inside surface of large hoop just above screen. Two steel wires, 0.05" diam., pass across bottom surface of wire screen, go through hoop, and then turn upward, 0.65", where they then pass through outer and inner hoops, then turn downward to lie parallel with surface; on inside, extend ~0.4". Screen measures ~18 holes per inch. Printed paper label on side: "LOAN EXHIBIT BY THE NEW HAMPSHIRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY". Red paint lettering on inside of large hoop: "FP111B".
C. Wood cylinder. Light tan wood hoop, with interior white coating. 3.5" thick. Tapered overlaps at ends, where it is tacked on inside near thinly-tapered end. On outside, four tacks in vertical column near inside tapered head. Cut edge on end of hoop on outside, 0.12" thick. About 2.5" away from it, six external tacks pass through both sections of wood. Six external tacks in vertical column right at edge of outer surface. One tack missing. Adjacent to them are five wrought nails passing through and clinched over on inside. Smooth white residue on surface on one rim, which is same as inside of other entire hoop. Opposite edge not quite as well finished, but still smooth. Couple of small grooves on this less-finished edge adjacent to large overlap end. Painted "FP111C" on inside in red.
