The Concord Railroad Corporation was incorporated by an act of the New Hampshire State Legislature on June 27, 1835. The railroad was incorporated primarily by Concord businessmen interested in connecting the capital city with growing manufactories and businesses developing in New Hampshire along the Merrimack valley south of Concord. At first stock purchases and construction went slowly, delayed by the depressions of 1837 and 1839. Construction was finally completed, connecting Nashua and Concord with 35 miles of track, and the railroad opened on September 6, 1842. The 1841 by-laws of the corporation defined the design of the seal and the fact that it was to be kept by the treasurer.
