- The drawing collection belonged to Herman Casper von Post (1828-1913) of New York, NY. Born in New York, to German immigrants Laurence H. and Henrietta Margareta (Meyer) von Post, he traveled frequently between Bremen, Germany, and New York City. He received a classical and business education in Bremen and New York schools before entering a branch of the family shipping, mercantile, and transportation business in Bremen in 1844. By 1851 he had risen to become a partner in the Oelrichs & Co. shipping business, headquartered in New York City. Von Post made frequent business and pleasure trips to Europe during his life.
Forty-one drawings in the collection depict the White Mountains, centered near North Conway, NH, at the Glen House, Kearsarge House, and Fabyans, from June through September 1873, and during June through August 1874. These areas had attracted growing numbers of tourists since the opening of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad and connecting stage lines in 1851. The drawings in and around the Glen House have important documentary value since the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1884. Eleven drawings done during July and August 1875 depict natural landmarks and communities in Pennsylvania and upstate New York. - Credit Line:
