- Description:
- Comforter. Made by Nellie Southard, Bristol, NH, c. 1910. Made of 20 blocks, each approximately 10" square, pieced with randomly shaped calicoes in the crazy quilt style. The blocks are mostly machine-pieced, and there is no embroidery over the seams as is typical of the silk crazy quilts. calicoes are various dress prints from the 1870s through the 1890s in claret, blue, black, greenish-tan, and red. The backing fabric is red with a black floral sprig print, probably from about 1900 or so. The batting is probably cotton; it has bunched up from washing. Comforter is tied with beige linen string at corners and center of each block. Edges are finished with a straight-grain binding of the backing material, stitched by hand.
