An early signed and documented example of Mary I. Whittier's whittling, the doll was purchased many years ago in Maine. Mary I. Whittier (1901-1978), the daughter of Frank O. and Emma M. (Abbot) Whittier, was born and raised on the family farm in Bow, NH. She learned whittling from her family and used her grandfather's jackknife to carve realistic human figures. During the 1930s, sher became a member of the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts and sold her carvings through their shop in Center Sandwich. She based the figures of
"Grandpa" and "Grandma" on a photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Hodge of Sandwich.
