- Date:
- 1855-1870
- Description:
- Small comforter made of lightweight silks (called "sarsnet" in the period) in a framed center design. The large center field is made of a pale blue silk with a woven vine stripe; this is framed by a 2.5" wide strip of multi-colored plaid, then a wide frame of solid brown silk, and a narrow strip of brown and white plaid. The edge is bordered with a brown and black woven silk ribbon with a sawtooth pattern that is typical of dress trimmings in the 1850s and early 1860s. The backing is a glazed twill-woven cotton that is typically used to line dress skirts in that period. The backing has been stitched with tucks to form a frame about 5.5" inside the edge. (The purpose of this tuck is undetermined.) The batting is white cotton, and the comforter is tied at intervals; the ties incorporate bundles of multi-colored wool yarns as decoration.
