Samuel Lane (1718-1806) moved to Stratham, NH, from Hampton in 1740, where he bought a farm, worked as a shoemaker, surveyed land, and established a family. Following Samuel Lane's death in 1806, his son Jabez Lane (1760-1810), who had purchased the farm in 1802, made additions and improvements to the house. Jabez Lane lived on Samuel Lane's homestead and continued the work of his father. Jabez married Eunice (Colcord) Lane. Jabez's son Charles Lane lived from 1796 to 1884 and continued the family trade as a tanner and shoemaker. In 1817, he moved to South Newmarket (Newfields), NH, where he sold shoes and leather and eventually groceries and dry goods. Charles moved back to his family's house in Stratham in 1867 and remained there until his death. Rev. John W. Lane, the son of Charles Lane, was born in South Newmarket, and graduated from Amherst College and Andover Theological Seminary. He was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church in Whately, MA, where he served from 1860 to 1878. He then went on become the pastor of the North Hadley, MA, Congregational church where he served until his death in 1911. The donor is the great grandson of Rev. John W. Lane.
