In 1875 the First Baptist Church of Concord at 20 North State Street underwent extensive renovations and redecorating, including extension of the north end of the building, and replacement of a dome with a spire. New black walnut pews and interior furnishings, including the pulpit, were purchased from the Sturtevant Manufacturing Company of Lebanon, NH. Established by Jesse C. Sturtevant (1820-1887) in 1873, the Sturtevant Manufacturing Company made furniture and custom woodwork. The company failed in 1875 and was sold in 1877 to Mead, Mason & Co., Lebanon, which had completed the renovations of the church. They employed 400 men making upholstered furniture until 1887, when the shops burned.
