Provenance:
The New Hampshire State Militia was nationalized as the National Guard in 1903. The uniform was worn by John Higgins Henry (1863-1954), Aide-de-Camp to Gov. Charles M. Floyd (1861-1923) and is dated by the donor as 1907-1908. John H. Henry was the son of James E. and Eliza Anne (Ide) Henry of Lincoln. Like his father, John H. Henry became a lumberman and resident of Lincoln, NH, where beginning in 1899 he and two brothers managed the family logging business as J. E. Henry & Sons. The family owned the bulk of the Franconia Range of mountains during the 1890s. In 1892, James E. Henry bought approximately 100,000 acres of virgin timber and established a logging enterprise at what is today the center of Lincoln. In 1902, they built a pulp and paper mill. The Henry family controlled Lincoln as a company town until 1917, when the family sold the business to the Parker Young Company. Subsequently John H. Henry moved to Ashland, Oregon, where he continued in the lumber business. The son of John H. Henry and his wife gave the uniform to Dartmouth College in 1955; they also lived in Ashland, Oregon.
