- Description:
- Engraving. Portrait of Daniel Webster (1782-1852). Steel engraving, printed on paper. Full-length standing portrait of a man with dark hair, white shirt, black neck cloth, dark buttoned coat and trousers, hat in one hand, the other outstretched, facing left. There are two young men slightly behind him, dressed in dark suit; one holding a hat in hand; the other with hand inside his vest. All three figures cast shadows. The scene is a church in Stratford-on-Avon where Shakespeare is buried. At the left high on a stone wall is a carving of Shakespeare, seated in a niche with an arched opening and a pillar at the side. Behind the young men appears to be an opening with a curtain - not floor length. The floor is made of stone and the three figures are standing on a rectangular slab which is probably a tombstone. Under Webster's foot is a rectangular insert with illegible writing on it. There is a second slab to the right which is also a tombstone, but the writing on it is also illegible. There are three printed lines below the scene: "DANIEL WEBSTER. / AT THE TOMB OF SHAKESPEARE. / Designed expressly for 'GODEY" by Schuessele - Phila."
