- Engraving. Portrait of George Washington (1732-1799). Steel engraving, printed on paper. Engraved by Frederick Halpin. Full-length portrait of a man sitting atop a white horse, he had white hair, black hat, light buttoned vest, light pants, black boots, black army officers jacket, light cape draped from his shoulders, his right hand pointing to the right, facing forward. Square-framed background is dominated by cloudy sky, a broken cannon lies on the ground near the horses hooves. "Painted by A. Chappel. / Engraved by F. Halpin." printed below portrait. "G. Washington" facsimile of signature, printed below portrait. "From the original Painting in the possession of the Publishers. / Johnson, Fry & Co. Publishers, New York. / Entered according to act of Congress A.D. 1880 by Johnson, Fry & Co in the clerks office of the district court of the souther district of N. York" printed below signature.
