Full-length standing portrait of a man with dark hair and trimmed beard and moustache, dark military uniform with white collar showing, buttoned coat with epaulets and cape over his shoulders, facing left, holding a paper with both hands. In the background is the shadow of a column at the left, part of a table with a rope- turned leg at the left, a chair partially behind the figure, a map on the wall just behind the figure's shoulder and a patterned rug on the floor at the right. "W. S. Rosecrans" facsimile signature is printed below figure with "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers. / Johnson, Fry & Co. Publishers, New York. ' / Entered according to act of Congress A.D. 1863 by Johnson, Fry & Co. in the clerks office of the district court of the southern district of N.Y." printed in three successive lines below the signature.
