Bust-length oval portrait of a man with a curled, white wig, white neck cloth, dark cleric's robe with sash, facing left; the portrait has a wide, oval frame with "ROLLIN." printed at the top; the background within the frame is dark gray. Smoke billows from the sides and bottom. The portrait is resting on a stand on which appears at the left a piece of paper with two books on top and an inkwell resting on top of the books. In the background at the left are two carved structures and several pieces of architecture visible. The structure on the left is an obelisk with the figure of a woman carved on it; the second structure is a tall column with a lattice design at the top and some figures lower down. There is a flight of stairs running up to intersect with the portrait frame. Just visible in the background on the right is a part of an oar propelled ship and a pyramid closer in. In the foreground from left to right is a rock formation, an open book lying on a sword, a shield with a man's face on it, a sphinx-like figure, an alligator, two halberds and some leaves protruding from stand at the right. Printed just beneath in three lines: "CHARLES ROLLIN, / Born 1661. Died 1741. / Baltimore. Published by Geo. Mc. Dowell Son."
