Description:
Engraving. Portrait of Charles Rollin (1661-1741). Engraved by John B. Neagle. Steel engraving, printed on paper. Bust-length oval portrait of a man wearing a white curled wig, white neck cloth, and dark buttoned cleric's robe with a sash at the waist. The portrait is within a wide oval frame with "ROLLIN." printed at top of frame facing left; dark gray background within the frame. The frame rests on an elaborate stand with billows of smoke wafting about. On the flat surface of this stand at left are papers, books, and an inkwell; on right is an hourglass and scimitar. The front of the flat surface has an Egyptian-like design with a central orb flanked by sea horse like creatures and two rows of angled feathers on either side of the orb. One Corinthian column at right seems to be supporting this structure. In left background, way in the distance, are some buildings; coming forward is a wall with some joined columns in front of which is a pyramid with an obelisk in front of it and a flight of stairs running up left side, ending as it meets with the frame. In right in background, parts of two oar-propelled ships are visible riding on some waves. In foreground from left to right are rocks, an open book lying on a sword, a shield with a face on it, a sphinx-like creature, an alligator, and several halberds. There are also some leaves protruding behind the alligator. "Designed and Drawn by John R. Pennimen, Boston" is printed immediately below on left and "Eng d by J. B. Neagle Philad.a" is printed on right.
