- Description:
- Engraving. Portrait of Thomas Pelham-Holles (1693-1768), First Duke of Newcastle. Engraved by William Holl. Steel engraving, printed on paper. 3/4 length portrait of a middle aged man facing right, light colored curly hair that is probably a wig that extends down on both sides to his shoulders with rows of curls, clean shaven; wearing a voluminous robe with various ribbons, bows, ruffles, and applique decorations on sleeves and at shoulders. Robe has dark-colored front edge or layer and his left arm is underneath the dark band on his left side. On that dark band is a roughly oval-shaped decoration near the shoulder with cross in center and band of letters around the perimeter: "HONI*SOIT (left side) QUI*MARY*PE.....* (right side central axis)" (*= pellets). A decorative chain around his neck of circles and possibly blossoms -- probably metal. Hanging from bottom of chain is figure on horseback. Underneath that is wide band that goes from his right shoulder diagonally to the left and tucked under wide belt. White stock with long ruffled cravat. Possibly a vest underneath belt with 3 buttons showing. Across his lap at his waist is a dark cord with some light spotty decorations. Part of it hangs down between his seated legs and the other portion of the cord hangs by his right side next to his leg. A long decorative tassel at the end of this cord. He's seat and appears to have tight knee britches, light colored. Decorative garter below his right knee. On left just below his knee is a garter with dark background, light border, lettering "**MAL*Y*D..." then goes around side of his leg. Ruffles in his lap ? what they're attached to. His right hand is bare. His left hand has a glove and is holding his other glove. To the outside of his left knee is the hilt of probably a sword. He's sitting in a chair with roughly curved back with carved decorations along the border. To his right there are a number of decorative pieces that look like clusters of feathers of different colors. Behind him is a dark surface with a vertical band to right of his head with some decorations on it. In upper left corner is part of an architectural column with a turned base and part of plain column. In upper right corner probably sky is showing. All is this in vertical rectangle format. Three thin lines around outside of image. Beneath portrait top line: THOMAS PELHAM, DUKE OF NEWCASTLE." Next line: "OB. 1768". Next line: "FROM THE ORIGINAL OF HOARE, IN THE COLLECTION OF / HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE." Next line off to right: "PROOF". Bottom line italics: "London, Published JanY. 1, 1831, by Harding Lepard, Pall Mall East." Directly under bottom edge of image in center: Engraved by W. Holl."
