- Engraving. Portrait of James Russell Lowell (1819-1891). Bust-length engraving of a middle-aged man facing left, dark hair, medium length parted in middle, sideburns and a long sculpted beard and mustache. Wearing a dark coat with wide lapel and collar, with banding around edge, high vest with collar, light-colored shirt, with dark tie or cravat mostly hidden by beard. Slight gray background over shoulders. Under the image is written: "J. R. Lowell" as facsimile signature. Signature bleeds through to back of sheet. On back in pencil at top is "J. R."
Underneath that in caps is printed: "James Russell Lowell (1819-1891)". On his coat: "F. F." at edge of his left lapel. - Material:
