- Engraving. Portrait of John Paul Jones (1747-1792). Engraved by J. B. Longacre . Steel engraving printed on paper. Bust length portrait of middle-age man facing right. Has fairly long hair combed back on sides with some length on back, clean shaven, dark "cocked" hat with light color banding around edges with cockade to left of center on front. Wearing military style coat, band of light material along edges along front, slightly raised collar with thin light colored border material, 9 buttons edge of coat with anchor profile on front, shoulder boards with additional button on each one and epaulets on each shoulder. On left side front of coat is ribbon with star medal hanging beneath it. Light colored vest, 3 buttons with anchor decoration, one button hole, light colored stock and cravat. Medium gray background set in rectangular shape. Facsimile signature below image: "J Paul Jones" "John" Paul Jones in outline font above signature. "Engraved by J. B. Longacre from a Portrait by C. W. Peale." Gilding along top, left, and bottom edges of sheet.
