Description:

Engraving. Portrait of Gen. John A. Dix (1798-1879). Engraved by Alexander H. Ritchie (1822-1895). Steel engraving, printed on paper.Three-quarter length portrait of a man facing left. light-colored hair, some combed over high forehead, no sideburns, clean-shaven, dark military uniform coat, tunic front with twelve buttons showing. Bar left shoulder with two stars on it. Short straight collar to coat, white shirt collar that sticks up above that, and small tie in front. Coat sleeves have contrasting cuff and three button on side of cuff and sleeve. White gloves. Dark belt with rectangular buckle with scrolls on either end. Light-colored sash under and associated with belt with two long tassels hanging down left side. Loop off top of belt and either sash or cord hanging down that supports sword and hook associated with sash. Left hand resting on sword hilt. Right arm resting on back of chair. Chair has four button in the upholstery across top. The top rail of chair comes to point with floral decoration. Small gray background around upper portion of torso. Lower elements of engraving are lighter and somewhat faint by design. At bottom of engraving in small print: "EngD. by A. H. Ritchie." Below that "GEN. JOHN A. DIX"
