- Engraving. Portrait of Gen. John A. Dix (1798-1879). Engraved by Alexander H. Ritchie (1822-1895). Steel engraving, printed on paper. Bust-length portrait of a middle-aged man facing right, light-colored hair, combed over top, clean-shaven, dark military uniform, with bar on right shoulder with two stars on it. Tunic front with eight buttons showing, short collar to coat, taller white collar that stands up and short tie. Small light gray background. Just below image is engraved "EngD. by A. H. Ritchie". "John A. Dix" facsimile signature under portrait that is underlined in small plain flourish. "G. Appleton & Co."
