- Engraving. Portrait of James Fenimore Cooper. Steel engraving, printed on paper. Bust-length portrait of upper middle-aged man, thin hair, some of which is pulled and combed around to front (exaggerates amount of hair he has), clean shaven, slight sideburns, facing left, dark coat, a vest, white shirt and possibly white tie. Has dark gray background Writing underneath edge of engraving to left and right side. On left side in script "Painted by C. L. Elliott." On right side lower edge in script "EngD. by Wm. Marshall." "J. Fenimore Cooper" facsimile of signature. "D. Appleton Co." bottom center below portrait. Top center in pencil "1 3/4". Around image at top two vertical and two horizontal guidelines. Near bottom of image on either side are two horizontal guidelines. Lower right corner in pencil "L-5406". To right of that and partway up side are a little three lines of numbers "98 /20 / 300". On back, in red pencil "# / 108" and circle around almost all of that with opening at top.
