Description:
Quilt. Whitework and redwork; made by Ellen Amanda Hodskins Kingsbury (1825-1898) of Walpole, NH, in 1895. Red and whitework embroidery on contrasting white and red cotton cloth. 7" x 7.5" checkerboard pattern of alternating red and white blocks. Each block has a plant, animal, or human figure embroidered with contrasting thread. "E A K / 1895" is embroidered in white thread on the center block. Red and white striped band border. Red and white printed cotton backing.

Tied comforter with a pieced top of alternating red and white blocks that are embroidered in the opposing color (white on red and red on white) in outline stitch with designs of Kate Greenaway figures, flowers, birds, butterflies, a horse, a cow, and horseshoe, a mandolin-type instrument, and a whimsical Man in the Moon being swept by a witch-like figure. These are all common motifs of the redwork style of embroidery that was fashionable in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The center block is embroidered "EAK / 1895" in flowery script. The embroidery is worked in a very fine outline stitch with cotton threads. The edges of the blocks are further embellished with lines of French knots. There is a border on three sides of simple red/white/red strips, again edged along the seaming with French knots in the opposing color. Tufted knots of white cotton attach the top to an thin batting and interlining. They do not go all the way through to the back, which was attached later. The backing fabric is cotton, printed with a red and white stylized spiral motif, from the 1930s, according to a handwritten label stitched to the back.
