- Description:
- Arm Chair. Made by Low & Damon, Concord, NH, for the New Hampshire State House, 1819. "Modified arrow-back" Windsor type chair with rolled crest rail extending slightly beyond the stiles at both sides; turned cylindrical stiles, each with an encircling groove 4.75" from the seat above which the fronts of the stiles are flattened. The stiles are halved at the tops to receive the crest rail. The back of the chair has four vertical spindles turned at the upper and lower ends, having at the center a lozenge above an "arrow-shaped" section, each section outlined in black. The two S-curved arms with rolled ends are each supported by three spindles. The front spindles have urn turnings and the rear spindles repeat the shape of those in the chair back. The U-shaped seat is upholstered in modern brown naugahide, except in the spindle area where the frame is exposed and outlined by a decorative groove. The upholstery is completely edged with brass tacks. The underside of the seat has black fabric stapled to it covering woven webbing. The stiles and two main arm supports are all tenoned through the seat frame. All four legs are turned with vase and spool elements above the main elongated baluster turning, and ring turnings below. The flat front stretcher, 2.6" high, bows back and has cut-outs at the ends; it has an elongated painted and grained panel. There are three stretchers (sides and front) which are bamboo turned. The arms are mahogany. The chair is painted yellow with black or dark brown edging, except for the arms, and the paint is completely worn off the top of the crest rail. The crest rail has a painted panel in the center of a setting sun and boat on the water (resembling N.H. State seal). This image is surrounded by grapes and grape leaves. The left arm has been broken. This chair appears to match the set of five New Hampshire State Senate chairs, 1888.025.02, though with some variations in turnings and decoration.
