Date:

Silk
Dimensions:
W-52 L-20.5 inches
Provenance:
Part of the Perry-Dudley Family Archive and Shepard Collection. Said to have belonged to Levi Bartlett (1784-1864) of Concord, NH. According to the donor, Bartlett's belongings could have ended up in the Perry-Dudley home in Exeter, NH, after Bartlett's daughter Martha Bartlett Angell died. Martha was childless, but was close to her cousin Lucretia Fisk Perry and her daughter Frances Perry Dudley (the donor's grandmother). Martha's possessions could have been inherited by Frances Perry Dudley.

It is also possible that the cravats belonged to Frances Perry Dudley's grandfather, William Gilman Perry, since he always wore them according to Frances. However, she believed that her grandfather's would have been worn out, not in new condition.
Credit Line:
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Shepard, Jr., in memory of Mr. Shepard's mother and maternal grandmother
