- Description:
- Hooked Rug. Designed by Heather Winterling; made by Ann Winterling (1932-2021) in Concord, NH from 1994 to 2004. It was a copy of one that she made in 1984. "Sweet William" was worked with strips of custom-dyed wool woven fabrics on linen. Design features a pasture with a peach tree and an Ayrshire bull (Sweet William) standing behind a wooden pasture fence entwined with lavender and white clematis. Initials and date in lower left corner: "AHW 1984 HW". The edges are finished with overcasting in wool yarns to match the hooked strips. The back is edged with a green-black wool lining, 2.75" wide; it is wider at the top with a wooden strip inserted and hanging tabs to facilitate display. Tag on back reads, "SWEET WILLIAM / WOOL HOOKED / ON LINEN / DESIGNED BY / HEATHER WINTERLING / HOOKED BY / ANN WINTERLING".
