Date:
1900
Description:
Iron. Small steel iron in two pieces. Top is thin and has black wooden handle and clamp with black wooden handle. Inscribed "PAT MAY...1900". Interior is coated with asbestos. Bottom piece is thick and solid with raised lettering on top, "ASBESTOS / SAD IRON"; pointed at either end. Base has two small holes opposite each other on long sides. Removable handle pivots on two short stubby pins that pass through sheet-metal cover for base unit. Two rounded protuberances on sides of cover that force sheet-metal arms on handle to expand outward from side of cover. When handle arms move outward, attached pins disengage from holes in sides of base unit. Main handle riveted to top of cover. A piece of sheet metal bent upward to make ends of support for wooden handle. Main wood handle has slight bulge in center and clears slightly at ends. Round-head machine screw passes through arms and handle to hold in place with hex nut at ends. Lever handle riveted in place through sheet metal arms. Off-white fabric-like layer inside cover, probably asbestos. Made up of three pieces. Cover metal highly polished. Probably goes with trivet 1993.27.16.1.
