- Description:
- Iron, electric. Steel, with black wooden handle. Projections from rear of iron and from electrical socket allow iron to be stood on end. Projections are heavy sheet metal. Heavy sheet-metal handle in two pieces, riveted to top cover. Thickness: 0.1". Turned wooden handle with bulbous center and ends; recessed slots in ends. Round-head slotted machine screw passes through front and rear handle supports; holds handle in place between supports. Rear handle support has heavy oval sheet-metal piece riveted to it. On back of piece is long rounded arm that has its end turned up; part of resting mechanism. Inside oval is probably ceramic with two round prongs that stick upward; 0.75" on central. Female socket piece would fit over prongs and inside sheet metal with electric cord attached to it; cord missing. Bottom piece approximately 1/2" thick. Has flat rear end and two parallel sides that come together at slightly rounded point at front. Curved sides chamfered. Bottom of plate appears to have plating on it; corroded metal around worn edges. Many small scratches on bottom running from front to back; some of these have corrosion in the tiny grooves. Heavy polished cover bolted to base assembly; rounded sides leading to small flat area on top where attachment bolt and handle attachments are secured. Shiny outer surfaces blend smoothly with top of chamfered sides of base. Handle attachment points slightly depressed, conforming with shape of handle arm ends. Heavy metal stand on back of iron, attached through holes in back of cover. Some raised channels around ends of stand for rigidity. Gold and black metal tag bolted to top: "WESTINGHOUSE / AUTOMATIC". Inscribed on end "PAT. Westinghouse 1-15-24 / 3-13-23 AUTOMATIC IRON 4-22-24 / 210-280 VOLTS 600 WATTS CAT. # LA-5 / WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC MFG. CO. / MANSFIELD, OHIO."
