Hanging, Bed
- Object Name:
- Hanging, Bed
- Object ID:
- 1966.079 b
- Date:
- 1750-1790
- Description:
- Crewelwork bed valance, American. The crewel (worsted) embroidery is worked on plain-woven linen in a design of bizarre stylized flowers, as well as recognizeable forms, such as strawberries and roses. The colors used are shades of pink, gold, and dark green, and the stitches include New England laid, closed herringbone, outline, darning, straight, and bullion. The valance has been lengthened at both ends with additional linen and the shape has been cut to create the scalloped form that was fashionable in the mid 18th century. It has been relined with plain-woven linen and bound with cotton tape that is dyed mauve, and a cotton twill tape was stitched to the top edge to create a tacking strip. The valances in this accession, a, b, and c, had no relation at the time of their origin--they are an assembled set.
