Description:
Rug. Braided and shirred. Round, made of wool fabric with some form of decoration, and a deep braided border made from strips of wool fabric. After worn out, the braided rug was used as the base for a shirred rug. The center of the original rug was covered with burlap and the stitching of the shirred strips of wool fabric was worked through all of the layers. The shirring is made of strips of red, dark olive, and creamy olive woven and felted wool fabrics. The design of the shirring forms concentric circles with the red as the center, then circles of alternating dark olive and creamy olive, and finally red edged with dark olive. The border design has the effect of rays so that the overall appearance is like a sunburst. Red rays are arranged evenly at top, bottom, right, left, and in between, with alternating dark olive and creamy olive shirring between the red strips. The center of the back is lined with wool fabric.
