Cloth Fragment

Object Name:
Cloth Fragment
Object ID:
1963.039.259
Date:
1875-1920
Description:
Length of sheer dotted black cotton, hand-stitched end-to-end to form a circle, with casings stitched along each side. One casing is stitched 2.25" from the edge, so that a ruffle would be formed by pulling on the drawstring. The fact that these are casings, not hems (which wouldn't be stitched in double rows, anyway), is evident in the openings and wear marks on the casings. However, the intended use of this piece is unclear; it may have been a custom-designed piece for a unique purpose. It does not make sense as a costume item (except for a 1970s tube top, which it obviously is not). It is not a skirt ruffle.

Provenance:
Collected by the donor's sister, Marion L. Cass (1894-1963). Miss Cass developed the collection around a core of the personal possessions of her mother, Lillie M. (Wilson) Cass (1867-1951) and added objects passed down in neighboring Haverhill, NH, families. Later, while living and working in Littleton, NH, she devoted her spare time to expanding her collection, eventually representing over a century of changes in clothing and accessory styles.
