Cloth Fragment

Object Name:
Cloth Fragment
Object ID:
1959.003.19 b
Date:
1850-1855
Description:
Four fragments of printed cotton calico from quilted petticoat 1959.003.19. Patterned with fine stripes overlaid with scattered dots; colors are shades of purple and white. Some of the purple has faded to brown and tan, which is distinctive of Hoyle's purple dye. The largest fragment is an elongated triangular shape (possibly an alteration of a pointed waist) of the calico backed with plain-woven cotton of a heavier weight (like sheeting); there are remnants of cotton batting between the layers, and lines of quilting stitches in heavy white cotton thread holding the layers together. The other pieces are small scraps of the calico.
