Cloth Fragment

1949.022.01 a
Date:
circa 1893
Description:
Fragments from woman's silk dress, consisting of two partial sleeves and five scraps of shot red/beige faille, six scraps of similar faille with satin plaiding in dark brown, coral, and pale aqua, and two cuffs of pleated cream organdy trimmed with narrow black velvet ribbon and fastening with brass hooks and eyes. The faille sleeves are in an 1880s style (narrow and three-quarter length as determined by the length from the elbow to the wrist opening) and suggest that if these scraps were taken from an 1893 dress, then it was altered to update the fashion. The plaid scraps are irregularly shaped, but also bear old stitching lines, indicating that they were refashioned.
