Pillowcase
Object ID:
2002.631.01
Date:
1800-1850
Description:
Pillowcase of plain-woven linen with an insertion of knitted linen lace down center. Constructed by folding the selvedge edges of the linen fabric toward the center and stitching them to the lace insertion. Open end is narrow-hemmed, with a line of pulled thread work just above hem. Cross-stitched initials "R H" are worked in cream-colored silk thread on either side of the lace insertion at open end. The lace insertion is about an inch shorter than the linen, so edge of linen dips at open end because it is pulled inward by the lace.
