Cloth Fragment. Woven and embroidered by Sally Sawyer (1797-1866), Sharon, NH; c. 1820. Square of heavy white cotton, with "candlewick" embroidery of cotton yarn. Fragment possibly cut from a larger piece, such as a bed cover. It has a new backing of modern white linen. Woven with an alternating heavy weight cotton weft yarn, which gives it a pebbly appearance. The embroidery is worked in a design of a central medallion, with initials "S.S." in script letters worked in outline stitch in center of a diamond framed by a square outlined with pompom-like tufts of the cotton yarn. This square is framed by a grapevine design, embroidered with satin and outline stitches, followed by two more rows of the pompoms.
