- Object Name:
- Hanging, Bed
- Object ID:
- 1966.079 c
- Date:
- 1760-1790
- Description:
- Crewelwork bed valance, worked in polychrome crewel (worsted) yarns on plain-woven linen/cotton. The valance featured designs of fruit trees at the ends and in the center, with large sprays of stylized flowers in between. Birds sit in the center tree and at the base of the other trees. Colors include mulitple shades of pink, green, blue, and yellow, along with brown, beige and cream. Stitches include New England laid, buttonhole, outline, herringbone, French knots, and eyelet. The valance has been modified, probably in the early 20th century Colonial Revival. It has been lengthened by adding extra strips of linen to the ends; it was machine-stitched to a linen backing , then (possibly) recut to form scalloped ends and bound with a combination of plain-woven wool and cotton tape dyed mauve. A strip of cotton twill tape was shipped to the top edge as a nailing strip (tack holes evident). The machine stitching is evident only by pulling back the bound lower edge.
