- Description:
- Bed valance of crewel-embroidered plain-woven linen/cotton, which has been modified probably in the early 20th century Colonial Revival. The embroidery is worked in crewel (worsted) yarns in multiple shades of pink, green, blue, and beige to cream. The design of a central double-handled bulbous vase is centered with a pink flower and is flanked by trailing vines blooming with a variety of stylized flowers. The stitches used include New England laid, outline, chain, and seed stitch. Where the embroidery has worn away, the original ink outlines of the embroidery pattern are visible. The valance was made longer by adding strips of plain-woven linen to the edges, echoing the scalloped contours of the original valance. It was machine-stitched to a lining of plain-woven linen, and bound with cotton tape in a mauve color. A white cotton twill tape was added along the top edge as a tacking strip. This valance was not originally part of a set with c.
