Object Name:
Valance
Object ID:
1938.001.128
Date:
1750-1820
Description:
Bed Valance. Crewel-embroidered panel, with later netted edging. The valance is made of plain-woven linen that has been pieced in several areas to make it the proper size and shape. The embroidery is done in crewel (worsted) yarns in three shades of green, four shades of pink, three shades of blue, four shades of yellow, and cream. The design is of a fruit tree in the center, flanked by horizontal vines blooming in various stylized flowers. Stitches include New England laid, figure 8, bullion, seed, cross, and outline stitches. The ends of the valance are scalloped, following the Queen Anne style. A netted edging with short tassels was added to the valance later in its life, probably in the early 19th century to update the style. Matches 1938.001.127.
