Object Name:
Quilt
Object ID:
1995.091.01
Date:
1860-1890
Description:
Quilt. Patchwork; 6" squares, various print cotton fabrics, connected with 2.25" wide muslin strips. 7.5" border, red vine print. Each square is made up of 18 triangles of 2 or more contrasting print fabrics (most squares have 2 prints; some have up to 6). Top is quilted to a plain muslin backing, with cotton batting. Quilting combines a diamond pattern and a wavy pattern. Approximately square. All hand stitched.
Pieced quilt with Windmill variation blocks in multiple colors, with plain muslin sashing and a wide double pink border. The fabrics include a number of the tiny mill prints that were favored for children's clothing in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The blocks, which are set on point, are generally pieced with two different calicoes, but some incorporate more patterns, including individual patches within the blocks that are pieced with two different calicoes. Colors include madder red, yellow, green, blue, brown, etc. The piecing is all stitched by hand. The quilting is stitched with white cotton thread following the piecing within the blocks (at 6-7 stitches to the inch), and in a chain pattern in the sashing and in the border (at 8-9 stitches to the inch). The backing fabric is plain muslin, the edge finish is back to front, and the batting is thin, probably cotton.
