Object Name:
Quilt

Date:
1760-1790
Description:
Quilt. Whole-cloth, wool, with a top of pink "tammy," an imported British glazed, plain-woven worsted, and a backing of home-woven golden yellow wool twill. The sophisticated quilting pattern suggests an early date for this quilt, as it still bears a strong British influence with the center medallion design, which is a stylized floral motif within a reverse-scalloped frame; the points of the scallops terminate in more stylized flowers. This is surrounded by a curving floral vine. The outer border, edged with straight lines, is a reverse-curved feather vine. The quilting is done in a cream-colored worsted thread worked at seven stitches to the inch. The cut-out corners, which are uneven at 24.5" x 11.5", are not original. Knife edge finish around the cut-outs, and across the top; the rest is front-to-back. The backing fabric has many weaving flaws, with the direction of the twill accidentally reversed at random. One piece of the backing fabric has a cross-stitched initial turned to the inside, showing that it's been reused.
