Description:
Quilt. "Stair Steps" or "Tumbling Blocks"; Diamond or "Illusions" pattern; patchwork; Plain silks, satin, and taffeta and black velvet. Bound with black velvet backed with tan shot silk taffeta. Cotton batt? Template-pieced silk quilt in the Tumbling Blocks pattern. The quilt is constructed of a variety of luxurious silks from the 1850s and 1860s, including cisele velvets, ombre satin, woven plaids, warp prints, a green silk woven with a design of lace draped through a ring; brocaded silks, ribbed silks, taffetas, and a black silk printed in gold with an Egyptian design (looks like a souvenir ribbon of some sort). Black velvet is used consistently for one side of each "block" and the light and dark colors are arranged to create the illusion of three dimensions. The quilt backing is pieced of two different silk prints, both khaki colored; one is printed with a paisley pattern, and the other with a floral motif. The quilt is bound with black velvet, and tied with tufts of tan/cream silk thread.
