- Object Name:
- Quilt
- Object ID:

- Date:
- 1870-1900
- Description:
- Quilt. Rose wreath (or reel) pattern; applique, constructed in nine blocks measuring 25" square. The wreath is appliqued with a red calico and a green calico; the blocks along one side are mostly missing the red buds that are included in the other blocks. The fully opened rose motif is assembled from four heart-shaped pieces, joined at the points, rather that just one rose-shaped block. The foundation fabric is plain muslin, as is the backing. The binding is double pink calico. The batting is thick and the quilting is plain, worked in a 2" square grid pattern, as well as around the applique motifs, at 5 stitches to the inch. The thick batting and coarse quilting are uncharacteristic of the fine applique of the top and indicate that the quilt was finished by another hand some years after it was started.
