Description:
Quilt. Attributed to Mary E. Norris (1829-1906), Concord, NH; 1870-1900. "Ball and Point" pattern, a design resembling a piece from the children's game of jacks; applique constructed of solid beige and white cotton. The blocks are very unevenly sized, but generally in the vicinity of 9" square, are arranged in a straight set, 8 x 7, with sashing of the same beige in between. Hand-stitched applique with machine-stitched sashing. The backing is plain muslin, as is the binding, which is machine-stitched on the straight grain. The batting is thick. Quilting is coarse, at about 6 stitches per inch, with white cotton thread. The quilting design follows the applique outline, then is a circle around that motif. In the sashing, the quilting design is a zig-zag line, with every zig being an oval, and every zag being a single line.
