- Description:
- Quilt. Attributed to Anna (Richardson) Hodgdon (1775-1859) and her daughter, Abigail (Hodgdon) Canney (1798-1874); Moultonborough, NH; 1796-1823. Pieced with a center field of alternating strips of a cotton block-printed floral vine pattern and a cotton block-printed blue pattern of a hexagonal mesh filled with grape clusters. Piecing in the vine pattern indicates that this fabric was reused, probably from a garment. This type of printed was fashionable in the second half of the 18th century. The blue print was probably produced in the last quarter of the 18th century. The three-sided border, which is about 18" deep, is a pink and white striped cotton, printed with a narrow stylized floral vine printed during the late 18th century. The quilt is edged on three sides with a netted white cotton fringe. The backing is pieced of various recycled plain-woven linens, two pieces of which bear cross-stitched initials, "H" and "A." The batting is thin and the quilting is worked in a chevron pattern in white or blue cotton thread, depending on the color of the face fabric.
