Description:
Quilt Top. Attributed to Sarah M. Liscom (1837-1895), Hinsdale, NH; 1880-1890. Chimney Sweep pattern. Pieced, in approximately 11-inch-square blocks. The blocks are arranged 8 x 8 in a straight set, but the lower two corner blocks are missing in order to create a T-shaped quilt (so there is a total of 62 blocks). Cut corners The blocks are pieced in a variety of 1870s and 1880s calicoes, with white around the edges. The maker did not concern herself with the straight grain when she cut the pieces, which, in part, causes the quilt top to be uneven and puckered. The blocks are also not a consistent size, with some being 10 3/4 inches and others being 11 1/2 inches, which contributes to the puckering. It is all hand-stitched. Predominate colors are the yellowish brown that is typical of the 1870s and 1880s, along with red and purple prints with black and white. The edges are raw.
