Mat, Table

Object Name:
Mat, Table
Object ID:
1977.047.15
Date:
1875-1900
Description:
Table mat or hearth rug of various brown and gray heavy woolen fabrics embroidered in a cut loop stitch with wool yarns in a six-petaled flower design. Each petal changes color from inside to outside; cream, green, brown, red, orange, and pink are used in various combinations. The cut loops are sculpted by trimming them so that the petals are thickest in the center. These blocks are arranged in rows by groups of three, separated by a strip of heavy black/brown/gray dobby weave wool. The back of the mat is lined with an olive green calico, and the edges are bound with the same calico, stitched on the straight grain. Where the binding has come unstitched in one corner, it is possible to see that the mat is interlined with heavy twill-woven wool.
