Bedspread

Object Name:
Bedspread
Object ID:
2002.634.02
Date:
1825-1900
Description:
Bedspread. White candlewicking on white muslin. Circular design in center. 6" squares cut from bottom corners. Hand sewn hems, machine made 5" fringe attached by hand. Center seam.. Candlewick-embroidered counterpane, worked with bundles of white cotton threads on a plain white muslin foundation. The muslin is seamed up the center, selvedge-to-selvedge. The embroidery is worked with cut loops, creating a texture like the chenille bedspreads of the 20th century that were inspired by this technique. The design features a center sun-like motif with radiating triangles around the circular center, which is filled with a grid pattern. The outer border is a simple grid pattern, followed by a narrow border around the edge filled with X's. The lower corners of the counterpane are cut to accomodate the bed's footposts, but only by 6 inches. All edges are hemmed by hand. A machine-made fringe with a deep woven header finishes three sides, including the cut-out corners.
